Shearling is not commonly used by footwear brands, mainly because it’s not an easy material to work with. At Ross & Snow, however, we find it important to provide unique, high quality footwear, which is why we utilize shearling for our designs.
Here’s why we believe that shearling is the most durable, comfortable, and luxurious material for shoes that take you from day to night.
What Is Shearling?
Shearling is recently shorn sheep’s skin. That skin goes through a tanning and dyeing process with the wool left on, making the shearling usable in many products. It’s considered a fur product because the wool remains intact after it’s processed.
The use of shearling dates back to prehistoric times for its function but has recently become a fashion statement. Today, you can find shearling on shoes, coats, mittens, hats, and more.

- Stands the test of time
What Makes a Sheepskin ‘Shearling’?
Sometimes a brand’s “shearling” label can be misleading. It’s only considered real shearling when the sheepskin is processed, tanned, and dyed with the wool still attached. Any process or quality different than this can’t be labeled shearling, and does not share the same characteristics as genuine shearling. Substitutes are usually a stitched-in wool layer that is either genuine or faux wool.
Is Shearling Warm?
The answer is undeniably, yes! Our ultra-warm shearling insulates yet is still breathable. Plus, it can be just as helpful keeping you warm on the outside of the shoe!
Is Shearling Only for Colder Climates?
Traditionally, shearling is worn in the winter and most brands only incorporate it into their winter collections. However, shearling can be worn comfortably year-round.
Is it Common for Men to Wear Shearling?
Yes! Shearling is a must-have in everyone’s closet, including men. The material is more than a style-choice; it’s functional., u
How Can I Tell the Difference Between Faux and Genuine Shearling?
Some common indicators to look for in faux products is a sheen on the fur and overall smoothness. Real shearling is more flexible, heavier in weight, and the fur is much denser than synthetic furs. Secondly, as with anything crafted with quality materials and complicated construction, there is usually a premium price to it. With the higher price, comes higher quality and all the benefits we mentioned earlier.
How Do You Clean Shearling?
Shearling can be dry-cleaned or hand-washed. To hand-wash your shearling, we recommend you use a mild detergent. Normal hair shampoo is ideal. Blot the area with a rag and cool water (be careful to ensure the water does not soak through to the suede!) Carefully rinse the excess moisture with a towel and let it air dry. Voilà!
Is Ross & Snow’s Shearling Responsibly Sourced?
Our shearling is ethically raised on family farms in Europe that have long-standing relationships with the tanneries that process our shearling. The European Union holds higher standards for sustainability and ethical treatment of animals than in the United States, which is why we are proud to source our shearling from Europe. The sheep are also designated as a food source already, making the shearling we use even more sustainable.
How does Ross & Snow Use Shearling?
We partner with multi-generational Italian factories that are masters of their craft. We begin with the silhouette of the shoe, and then incorporate shearling where it makes sense: whether it serves to be functional, fashionable, or both. Our product is made up of only the finest shearling, making all of our footwear naturally moisture-wicking and odor-resistant.
